Another steady run

Slowly getting back into the running groove. A nice and steady two miles with another mile walking. Just under two months away from race day and hoping I am fit enough to complete the 10K. Looking back I wonder how the heck I ever did three marathons at the end of the 90’s – youthful energy methinks 🙂

Tonight’s soundtrack included folk metalers Lyriel, the mighty FM, Black Stone Cherry and Pretty Maids.

Another five pound pledged today through good old fashioned paper sponsor forms, so now over seventy pounds raised for Children with Cancer UK.

Patsy Matheson & Becky Mills (Waking the Witch) News Update March 2012‏

(Kind supporters of my fundraising – extremely talented and enjoyable folk duo)

Hello Everybody!

Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter! We hope you’re all well and enjoying the sunshine.

Just a quick note to bring you up to date with our news.

Becky Mills and myself have been busy gigging all over the country. Thanks to all of you who have come along to the shows, joined in singing, helped us carry our gear, put us up, joined the mailing list, bought us sherry, etc! What a superb time we have had! We have been constantly reminded of how lucky we are to play music for a living.

Here’s a few links to what reviewers have been saying about the live performances:

Barnsley Acoustic Festival on Easter Sunday  www.barnsleyacoustic.co.uk,

Bristol Folk Festival on May Bank Holiday (Mon 7th May) www.bristolfolkfestival.com,

Friday 25th May, The Acoustic Festival of Britain www.acousticfestival.co.uk

Sat 7th July – Heptonstall Festival

Saturday 1st September – Lanark Connections Festival

We were joined onstage in Otley by the amazing Finn McArdle on percussion and Jon Short on double bass  – who together make up what is probably the coolest, meanest rhythm section in the country – and are delighted to announce that they will again be accompanying us at Bristol Folk Festival and the Acoustic Festival of Britain.

These are all fantastic events! It would be great to see you there. Details are on the gigs page at www.patsymatheson.co.uk or www.beckymills.co.uk

Stories of Angels & Guitars

The new CD ‘Stories of Angels & Guitars’  can be purchased either CD or download version from Amazon at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stories-Angels-Guitars-Patsy-Matheson/dp/B006BJ5THI

Here’s what people have said about it:

There’s an overcrowded market in the UK of female singer-songwriter-guitarists, but Patsy Matheson stands out for the quality of her singing and more importantly, her songwriting…her best songs are thoughtful, delicate and impressively original’ – Robin Denselow, The Guardian

‘There is something of a light-voiced female John Martyn about Patsy Matheson’s singing on So The Same, an impressive and original track on her new album Stories of Angels & Guitars… her sensitive lyrics and strong singing just click.’ – Martin Chilton, The Telegraph

“If I still had a radio show, I’d be playing this CD.”   – Andy Kershaw

Full versions of these and other reviews are on the website at:

http://www.patsymatheson.co.uk/reviews.php

So far it has received some great radio play, including spins from Mike Harding on his Radio 2 Folk Show (he said ‘The lass has got a lovely voice – this song (Hundred Guitars) is one of those great songs that tells a story but does it in a very subtle way’), and many of the other BBC local folk show presenters, including The Durbervilles at BBC Radio Leeds, Genevieve Tudor at BBC Radio Shropshire, Phil Brown at The Drift on BBC Radio Lancashire, Johnny Coppin at BBC Radio Gloucesterhire, Gordon Swindlehurst at BBC Radio Cumbria and Judi Spiers at BBC Radio Devon who made it her album of the week! Long may local radio continue!

Big thanks also to other shows who have featured it, especially Richard Bolland at www.pureradio.org.uk on his Roots & Fusion show who has played it loads!

Brisk run tonight

Getting slowly back into the training but still not back to my normal pace after a chest infection. Nice that the evenings are getting lighter and hopefully I can mix in a few park runs as running all the time on pavements/tarmac plays merry havoc with the old knees.

Running soundtrack tonight included Gypsy Pistoleros, the Stage Dolls, Doogie White and the Pet Shop Boys (can’t beat a bit of pop pomp).

Some of the recent wishes granted by Make-A-Wish Foundation UK

You can read more about them here on their website but I have posted a couple below:

Despite being confined to a wheelchair, Cariad loves dancing – her favourite show is Strictly Come Dancing.  It wasn’t a surprise to discover that her heartfelt wish was to watch the Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour and meet the dancing celebrities…

Cariad travelled with Dionne and Dad Jeremy  from her home in Southampton and spent the day in Cardiff enjoying afternoon tea and sampling a new cuisine – Chinese – before taking her seat to watch the live show, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Dionne told us: “She was very excited; she loves dancing and even wants to do wheelchair dancing.”  She met some of the stars of the show, as well as a couple of the judges, as you can see from our pictures.

Cariad has to sleep on a ventilator, has physiotherapy every day and is looked after by two nurses, but Mum Dionne explains “this is just normal life for us – we don’t know any different”.

Last word goes to Dionne: Strictly Come Dancing is Cariad’s favourite show and Chelsee is her favourite celebrity dancer, so meeting her was the icing on the cake. Cariad even said ‘this is the best day of my life’ and it really was; when we got home she cried because it was over!”

=================================================
Newcastle United fan Ryan, 15, was born prematurely with Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula (an abnormal connection between the oesophagus and the trachea). We recently granted his wish to meet his idol – Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew.

Ryan’s first surprise was a visit from Alan to his home in Dudley. Ryan’s Mum, Amanda, said: “His face was a picture when Alan arrived. Ryan asked hundreds of questions and told jokes. Alan was lovely, he gave Ryan his personal training shirt and even signed it for him.” The next day Ryan was given a tour of Newcastle United’s training ground and was able to have lunch with Alan and a few players, before being given Tim Krul’s signed goalie gloves and a huge bag of goodies. Then it was on to the Newcastle United versus Queens Park Rangers match where he sat in the directors’ box and got to meet the Toon chairman and coaches.

Amanda said: “The look on Ryan’s face throughout the weekend was absolutely priceless, especially following his recent surgery in November.”

Ryan has had to undergo many operations over the past 15 years, including a full gastrectomy and surgery to treat a Diaphragmatic Hernia. He also has Epilepsy, has been left deaf after contracting Meningitis and for the past four years he has been fed intravenously.

Amanda said: “Ryan’s wish was absolutely amazing and turned into a dream come true weekend. He absolutely loved the training and meeting everyone, being in a posh seat and watching the match, but the icing on the cake was Alan Pardew coming to visit him at home! Ryan is still on cloud nine. He has said it is such a special memory he will never forget!”

“Make-A-Wish is amazing for children like Ryan whose lives revolve around hospital and treatments or operations. To do something they have always dreamed of and have wonderful memories is fantastic.”

Welcome

Welcome to my blog covering my fundraising and also related news items from the charities I have fund raised for in the past/present plus some interviews with fellow fundraisers and musicians/authors/celebrities who have kindly donated items for my auctions. Feel free to browse away and post a comment if you want, feedback always welcome.

For 2012 I am doing the Staines 10K on Sunday May 13th raising funds for Children with Cancer UK and all year I am raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK through signed EBay items donated by bands/authors/celebrities.

The idea is to have a whole host of gigs/events mention via their social media posts the work of the Nordoff Robbins charity on and around the 8 February each year
