News – Children with Cancer UK newsletter

Raj was two and a half years old when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Over five years later, after enduring six operations, chemotherapy, proton beam therapy and immunotherapy, his mum, Suki was told Raj had three months left to live.

“Raj was oblivious. He was happy and smiling. The last few months were tough but we made some beautiful memories. On April 20th 2018, my beautiful baby boy died in my arms at home. I am so very proud of Raj. I miss him so much and life will always be empty without him. My only hopes are we find a cure someday so no other family has to face this reality. A cure really can’t wait.” Suki, Raj’s mum, February 2019.

Raj’s mum Suki tells their story here

Brain tumours kill more children than any other cancer. We’re working hard to raise awareness of this and, with your help, fund vital research to develop better treatments.

An announcement from our CEO, Dhivya O’Connor, confirms the need for research into the treatment of brain tumours and has pledged a further £1 million towards it.

Brain Tumour Research

When a child is diagnosed with a brain tumour, each family’s journey is different. Blake was given three weeks to live. Four years on, mum Llian tells their story.

Listen to her five short podcasts as she tells their story.

Today is World Cancer Day

Every day, 12 families in the UK will be given the news
that their child has cancer.

On World Cancer Day,
Blake’s mum is asking for your help.

At just three years old, Blake was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He spent months in intensive care and had 18 months of chemotherapy. Blake has been left paralysed from the chest down and with other ongoing difficulties.

But now nine years old, Blake’s in school, he’s a happy little boy and has been stable for over four years. Let’s hope that continues.

Blake’s mum is asking for your help today – to give £12 for the 12 children diagnosed with cancer today.

Monday 4th February is World Cancer Day, when the world comes together to raise awareness and to take action to reduce the devastating impact that cancer has.

Today, 12 families in the UK will be given the devastating news that their child has cancer. To mark 2019’s World Cancer Day, we hope to raise awareness by shining a spotlight on this shocking statistic. Will you consider donating £12 to support young cancer patients and to keep their families together.

World Cancer Day – Family Videos

For this year’s World Cancer Day, we asked families affected by childhood cancer to share their stories. They tell us about their journeys and show us why it’s so important to help fund breakthrough research and keep families together.

Training and the Staines 10K

Good to see the Staines 10K on Sunday May 19th has nearly reached its 600 entrants maximum and raised over £400 for charity through entrance fees. I am running and raising funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).

I am doing a couple of runs per week at the moment although the warmer weather does tend to entice me out more. Yes I freely admit I am a fair weather runner 🙂

Still looking for a half marathon between June and late August. My home town Potters ‘Arf would be ideal but I can’t make that weekend. Any suggestions most welcome.

Hope to have some more signed goodies soon. Have a fair few requests out there and just hoping some respond.

My JustGiving pages are:

http://www.justgiving.com/stokie2013 (for the NDCS)

http://www.justgiving.com/rochdale2013 (for CLAPA)

Any help promoting them very much appreciated.

Staines 10K for next year and possibly Potters ‘Arf

I will be running the Staines 10K again next year on Sunday May 19th for both my chosen charities – CLAPA and NDCS. I am also looking for an early summer half marathon and my hometown my provide one with the Potters ‘Arf on Sunday June 9th. This will be another big challenge and step up after completing ten miles in this year’s Great South Run. Anyone else know of a good (flat!) half marathon in June/July time in the London/Surrey area or Staffordshire/Cheshire please let me know.

Also looking for any companies and/or bands who’d like to endorse my running and fundraising in anyway. I will for example happily road test say any new confectionary or sweets 🙂

Fundraising plans for 2013…

Not to achy after the Great South Run on what was an enjoyable run. My fundraising for Children with Cancer UK currently stands at £697.78 (thanks to some recent donations), which added to the £510 raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK gives over £1,200 raised 🙂

There are still a few signed goodies on EBay to be had, with the lively folk rockers Bellowhead sending a signed CD and currently on line is a signed CD from prog rockers Jadis:

What’s next? Well spurred on by this year’s running I am going to attempt a half marathon next May/June time plus the Staines 10K. Ideas for any fundraising most welcome.

I have two charities lined-up, one chosen by Matt Curtis who kindly sponsored me for each of my three races this year. He has chosen the Cleft Lip And Palate Association (CLAPA). Clapa is a support organisation for all those with and affected by cleft lip and palate. One in 700 children are born with this condition – about 1,000 a year in the UK. CLAPA provides information, advice and one to one support through its national network of branches. It also runs confidence-building camps for children and distributes bottles and teats for babies born with cleft lip and palate.

The second one is The National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) NDCS is the national charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people. We represent the interests and campaign for the rights of all deaf children and young people from birth to independence. NDCS believes that the family is the most important influence on a deaf child’s development. NDCS supports the deaf child through the family as well as directly supporting deaf children and young people themselves.

For these two charities I will again be auctioning off signed goodies via EBay so any contacts much appreciated.

Thank you all again for your support, it is very much appreciated by me and the charities.

Great South Run – completed!

Knackered but finished 🙂 First time I have run further than 10K since 1999. Great day and atmosphere as the people of Pompey made you feel very welcome – even in my Stoke top and scarf. I did get two ‘Come on Stoke!’ on the way round the course. Lovely course running around the historic naval dockyards/HMS Victory and ending up running by the Southsea seafront. The jelly babies counter at nine miles provided a welcome boost  as well. Well organised and run, highly recommended if you fancy a nice flat race.

My finishing time was under two hours – yippee! 1hr 59m 12 secs 15,158th (race field just over 24,000)

Thanks to my lovely kids for their support and musical selections  (my daughter loaded my IPod with delights such as You Me At Six, Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold & Fearless Vampire Killers and I sneaked on some Jimi Jamison, Chris Singleton & Dev Townsend!).

Big thanks to my family, friends, work colleagues, Facebook pals, the bands and authors who kindly donated signed items to auction and all those that have sponsored me, spread the word or liked a Facebook post. I am truly humbled, thanks again.
Now what race next folks 😉
Jason

It’s all to help spread the word on my three runs (two down and the Great South Run to come on 28th October) this year to raise funds for Children with Cancer UK.

It’s race month :)

Great South Run month as race day is on Sunday October 28th. A gentle (cough) ten mile run around the streets of Southsea and Portsmouth resplendent in my Mr Men running top and underneath that my Stoke City top.  Training has been harder this past few weeks due to a painful toe (dropping a jar of marmalade on it is not recommended) but looking forward to the run as there will be 23,000 odd fellow runners and it is onChannel 5 (yes for once something decent to watch on that channel). My daughter has loaded an IPod of specially selected music to keep me going, although some of her musical tastes are loud even for me J

I have raised my fundraising target to £1,000, currently it stands at just over £519 hasnow been raised for Children with Cancer UK:

Well done all on completing the Great North Run

…well done especially to those running and raising funds for Children with Cancer UK.

The next Great Run will be the one I am in, the South one – yikes!

Nicely over the £500 mark now with my fundraising for Children with Cancer UK but need a push to get up to my £1,000 target. Hopefully a few more signed items soon for auction, stayed tuned 🙂
