Why do I fundraise?

A question I have been asked a few times down the years (I’ve done at least one charity event every year since 1985) and the main reasons are the charities are personal or ones that support/help young people, like this year’s one the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Plus I love helping others as much as that sounds like a Miss World reply!

It is always hard coming up with a novel idea for fundraising be it Forty Nights for my fortieth birthday where I held a charity gig at Brentford FC and got a whole host of bands to plug it at their gigs or webpages. The Shirt Of Hurt (kindly borrowed of Sports Relief/Danny Baker) back in 2010 saw me complete the Staines 10K in a P*** V*** top – I still have nightmares about it 😉 Still it raised over £550 for the Macular Disease Society.

In fact running is a good way to raise funds as I did a 10K back in 2007 and rasied over £1,000 for the Parkinson’s Disease Society. I have even run between WHS Travel stores (train & underground stations) in central London in the late 90’s. A more leisrely fundraiser was last year’s All Booked Up where myself and my daughter (who has done some sterling fundraising herself and made me one proud dad) did a year long sponsored read for Surrey Young Carers.

So times are hard but try & help where you can, as the real stars are those who donate their money or signed goodies for charity auctions and spread the word as fundraising is no good if no-one knows you are doing it or supports it.

Robin George album charity download

ROBIN GEORGE has kindly donated a download of his wonderful nine track album ‘Love, Peace & Power’.

new credits GTTROCK

It is only £10 to download the album and all proceeds will go to CLAPA (Cleft Lip & Palate Association):

Says Robin George:

‘Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to work with many of the best musicians in the industry and it occurred to me that one song I wrote some years ago, LovePower and Peace, had been recorded by many of those talents.

I mentioned to a friend that I was planning to mix the song featuring all those artists, and he suggested making it a sharing single.

It was so obviously a great idea that my enthusiasm was shared by everyone I approached. As I invited each artist to join LovePower, they would suggest others that they thought would love to be involved for example, Pete Thompson (Robin Trower Band) introduced Pete Haycock (Climax Blues Band) Dom Brown (Duran Duran)  got involved.

So this has become a labour of love not only for me, but for all of the great artists involved. Everyone has commented that they feel honoured to be working with such fabulous musicians for such deserving causes,

Taking a break…plus Staines 10K

Staines 10k looming nearer and I am running for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS). This run and one in the summer for CLAPA will be my last fundraising for this year as I am going to take a year off.

It is getting harder and harder to raise funds and I don’t like to keep asking the same generous folks and pestering the same wonderful bands & authors who have kindly donated signed items.

Still I aim to go out with a nice decent sum raised for both charities and as ever any help much appreciated.

Training and the Staines 10K

Good to see the Staines 10K on Sunday May 19th has nearly reached its 600 entrants maximum and raised over £400 for charity through entrance fees. I am running and raising funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).

I am doing a couple of runs per week at the moment although the warmer weather does tend to entice me out more. Yes I freely admit I am a fair weather runner 🙂

Still looking for a half marathon between June and late August. My home town Potters ‘Arf would be ideal but I can’t make that weekend. Any suggestions most welcome.

Hope to have some more signed goodies soon. Have a fair few requests out there and just hoping some respond.

My JustGiving pages are:

http://www.justgiving.com/rochdale2013 (for CLAPA)

Any help promoting them very much appreciated.

The third book on one hit wonders will be online soon. Having read all  three books I can highly recommend them, so you get a great read plus you help a charity at the same time. Thanks again to Tom Bromley and do pop along to his website http://www.tombromley.co.uk/

I am also working on getting signed items for the Stoke City £150 fundraising (to tie0in with the club’s 150th anniversary) for the two charities. I am aiming to raise £150 for CLAPA & the NDCS through these signed Stoke City related items. Any contacts for Stoke players past and present gratefully received.

More signed goodies soon 🙂

In running news I have signed up for my first race of 2013 with the Staines 10K on Sunday May 19th. This one I will be running for the NDCS and then I plan to do another 10K in July for CLAPA and then all being well a half-marathon in August/September time.

I am also looking at getting some sigend items related to Stoke City FC who celebrate their 150th anniversary this year. My idea is to raise at least £150 from related Stoke City items for the two charities.

Dante Fox goodies raising funds for CLAPA & NDCS

BIG thanks to Dante Fox for kindly donating two CD’s and t-shirt. You can bid on them here:

CD for CLAPA

CD & t-shirt for NDCS

The running is going okay, I tend to do one to two runs per week over the winter and then ramp it up in February/March time. I am very grateful to anonymous donations on JustGiving for my fundraising for CLAPA. Truly humbling and now means over £400 has been raised for CLAPA 🙂

Happy New Year & new charity auctions coming soon

Well the fundraising for CLAPA is off to a good start with £370 already raised thanks to John Micthell (It Bites) and the winning bidder for a guitar lesson & lunch with John Mitchell.

Coming soon will be signed goodies from author Tom Bromley (he has written a series of highly readable books on pop music) and melodic rockers Dante Fox, including a rather special treat for one lucky fan – more details soon.

Also I am very pleased to have a guest blogger who will be writing about their family and in particular their son to raised awareness over cleft lip and palates. More details to follow shortly.

Running wise I am doing the Staines 10K again this year for both charities and planning doing a half mararthon in the summer. Did my first run of the year last night and slightly creaky this morning 🙂

Thanks again for your continued support and wishing you all the best for the coming year and beyond.

John Mitchell guitar lesson & lunch raises £370

Big thanks to John Mitchell for kindly donating his time for this and all the It Bites fans who bid on this, including the lucky winner.

You can buy It Bites excellent new single ‘Cartoon Graveyard’ on download now.

More charity auctions soon for both CLAPA and the NDCS (National Deaf Children’s Society) including some signed goodies from Dante Fox and a special treat for one of their fan’s at next April’s HRH AOR festival. More details soon.

Launching today – Parkinson’s UK public awareness campaign

Launching today – Parkinson’s UK public awareness campaign

As a valued supporter of Parkinson’s UK we wanted to share some exciting news with you. Today we are launching a public awareness campaign about the condition and the impact it can have on people’s lives.

Adverts will appear in the press, on billboards around the UK and online throughout December. You can read the stories behind our campaign on our website parkinsons.org.uk

Why are we running this campaign?

Every hour someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson’s, yet the general public know very little about the condition, and how it affects your everyday life.

This is why awareness raising is crucial, so we can change attitudes and challenge the prejudice faced by people living with the condition. It’s also vital to help us engage more supporters to raise money, find a cure, campaign for better services and make sure that no one has to face Parkinson’s alone.

Support the campaign

There’s lots of media and online activity happening to accompany the awareness campaign throughout December, and you can keep up to date with it all on our website and on social media.
