Running the Reading Half Marathon 2023 for Sobell House Hospice charity

2023 marks 25 years since I ran my first marathon – London marathon April 1998. To celebrate that milestone I know I can’t do a marathon distance now, however, a gentle(!) half marathon through the suburban delights of Reading finishing at their football stadium seems a perfect way to spend the first Sunday in April 2023 🙂

My last run was a 10K back in 2016 and I haven’t run properly in over 18 months. Let’s have one last race hurrah raising funds for the vital & caring work done by the Sobell House Hospice charity.

Thank you for reading and any support gratefully received.

I will aim to update on my training & fundraising (any ideas gratefully received!). I am currently back using the excellent NHS/BBC app Couch To 5k This time around listening to BBC Radio 1 DJ Reece Parkinson (don’t listen to Radio 1 I hasten to add!) as my ‘Mr Motivator’. he’s good but miss the dulcet tones of Michael Jordon.

August training update Eaking half marathon

A quick update…with just under seven weeks until race day the training is steady as they say. Still now it’s the summer holidays my daughter is on the case and cycling along to keep me running further 🙂

My work colleague will also be happy as Macmillan Cancer Support provide up to six iron on letters for your running top and there could only be one choice…Sparky! Good as well as keeps my Stoke City theme going which I manage to sneak in most races I do. Once I have received the top and fathomed out how an iron works I shall post a picture.

The charity I am running for on the 28th September is Macmillan Cancer Support whose nurses (along with their help line) do sterling work helping those with cancer and supporting their family and friends:

PS there is also Centrepoint who I ran the Dorney Dash 10K for. They are the UK’s leading charity for homeless young people. It supports over 6,000 16-25 year olds into housing and employment every year. Working directly in London and the north of England, Centrepoint also partners with other organisations across the UK and gives homeless young people a voice through the Centrepoint Parliament. It conducts research and influences government policy with the overall aim of ending youth homelessness.

Dorney Dash completed…in under an hour :)

Despite my best attempts to injure myself the night before the race by dropping a fridge magnet on one of my toes, I lined up at the start of the Dorney Dash 10K on a very hot morning. The course is a lap and a half of the impressive Dorney boating lake, used in the 2012 Olympics and owned by Eton College.

It is a flat course but on a sunny day like the race day there is little shade and it was tough going. Despite this (and I think spurred on by the fact I was keen to be reunited with my children and shade at the finish line) I beat the one hour mark with a chip time of 59 minutes 40m seconds, the first time in over ten years!

I would highly recommend this as a 10K race for either a PB or for a first time/beginner as it is flat, lovely surroundings and extremely well organised.

I ran this race for the Centrepoint charity and next up is the Ealing half marathon when I will be running for Macmillan Cancer Support

Dorney Dash again this year :)

I am entering the Dorney Dash 10K on Saturday 26th July after really enjoying last year’s run. It is my training run for the Ealing Half marathon later in the year. Lovely course with two laps around Dorney Lake used by Eton College and in 2012 it was the Olympic rowing lake.

I have also added Macmillan Cancer Support as a charity I am running the Ealing Half marathon for, along with the Centrepoint charity.

Running the Ealing half marathon for Centrepoint charity

I had a year off fundraising and as I enjoyed the Ealing half marathon so much last year I thought I’d do it again! I am going to raise funds for the charity Centrepoint who help young homeless people in London and the north. They do some sterling work and they have inspired me to run for them (along with the great work my old school pal Jerome  does with the homeless charities in Hull).

Anything you can do to help would be much appreciated and any support on the day most welcome. It’s a (mainly) flat course and plenty of good vantage points along the route.

£15 could provide a warm and safe place to stay for the night for a vulnerable 16-25 year old with nowhere else to go

£20 could provide a workshop about the consequences and risks of drug use run by one of our specialist health therapists

£50 could pay for the clothes that a young person would need to attend an interview or start an apprenticeship

£120 could help keep our emergency service running for another day: helping young people straight from the street

Thanks as ever for your continued support and feel free to spread the word

PS Last year you all helped with raising £1,246.24 for three charities:

Cleft Lip & Palate Association (CLAPA) = £498.29 (Staines 10K)

National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) = £52.95 (Staines 10K)

Cancer Research UK = £695 (Dorney 10K – I donated my running legs for an event in memory of a fellow Magnum fan, the hard part of fundraising was done by his family, friends, fellow fans and the band members)

Warm-up 10K in July for the big ‘un in Septemeber

For my ‘warm-up’ race for the Ealing half-marathon at the end of September I am doing a new 10K for me the Dorney Dash on Saturday 20th July. Looks like a lovely course around the former Olympic rowing lake and it’s a flat course as well J

I am also hopefully getting a few more signed goodies for EBay charity auctions for the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) who I will be running the Ealing half marathon for.

Taking a break…plus Staines 10K

Staines 10k looming nearer and I am running for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS). This run and one in the summer for CLAPA will be my last fundraising for this year as I am going to take a year off.

It is getting harder and harder to raise funds and I don’t like to keep asking the same generous folks and pestering the same wonderful bands & authors who have kindly donated signed items.

Still I aim to go out with a nice decent sum raised for both charities and as ever any help much appreciated.

Thanks to TV chef legend Ainsley Harriott for donating a signed photo raising funds for the NDCS (National Deaf Children’s Society). You can bid on it here

More signed goodies soon 🙂

In running news I have signed up for my first race of 2013 with the Staines 10K on Sunday May 19th. This one I will be running for the NDCS and then I plan to do another 10K in July for CLAPA and then all being well a half-marathon in August/September time.

I am also looking at getting some sigend items related to Stoke City FC who celebrate their 150th anniversary this year. My idea is to raise at least £150 from related Stoke City items for the two charities.

Happy New Year & new charity auctions coming soon

Well the fundraising for CLAPA is off to a good start with £370 already raised thanks to John Micthell (It Bites) and the winning bidder for a guitar lesson & lunch with John Mitchell.

Coming soon will be signed goodies from author Tom Bromley (he has written a series of highly readable books on pop music) and melodic rockers Dante Fox, including a rather special treat for one lucky fan – more details soon.

Also I am very pleased to have a guest blogger who will be writing about their family and in particular their son to raised awareness over cleft lip and palates. More details to follow shortly.

Running wise I am doing the Staines 10K again this year for both charities and planning doing a half mararthon in the summer. Did my first run of the year last night and slightly creaky this morning 🙂

Thanks again for your continued support and wishing you all the best for the coming year and beyond.

Staines 10K for next year and possibly Potters ‘Arf

I will be running the Staines 10K again next year on Sunday May 19th for both my chosen charities – CLAPA and NDCS. I am also looking for an early summer half marathon and my hometown my provide one with the Potters ‘Arf on Sunday June 9th. This will be another big challenge and step up after completing ten miles in this year’s Great South Run. Anyone else know of a good (flat!) half marathon in June/July time in the London/Surrey area or Staffordshire/Cheshire please let me know.

Also looking for any companies and/or bands who’d like to endorse my running and fundraising in anyway. I will for example happily road test say any new confectionary or sweets 🙂
