National Deaf Children’s Society news

ndcs

Our event at Parliament in 2018. We took families and deaf young people to talk to MPs about tackling the funding crisis in deaf education.

Thanks for making a difference to deaf children

We value your opinions and always try to act on the information you give us – whether that’s through our membership survey, one of our polls, or an evaluation of an event.

Your views make a real difference – here’s how:

You put pressure on the Government

In October, thanks to you answering some quick questions about your child’s audiology service, we made a brilliant piece with Channel 5 News. This highlighted what you think the biggest problems are, and what the Government needs to do to improve them.

You fought for deaf children’s rights

In November, we asked you about cuts to deaf education. Your incredible response made Channel 4 News, The Guardian and Times Educational Supplement. We took your answers to the Minister responsible and argued for more money for deaf children’s education.

You kept us on track

In our 2018 membership survey you told us what matters to your family and how you think support for your child can be improved. We’re focusing our efforts on what’s important to you – including fighting for better services, campaigning for local authorities to provide radio aids and planning for a careers campaign.

Look out for our 2019 membership survey, which launches on 6 February. It’s another chance to set the agenda – so please don’t stop sharing your views.

Taking a break…plus Staines 10K

Staines 10k looming nearer and I am running for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS). This run and one in the summer for CLAPA will be my last fundraising for this year as I am going to take a year off.

It is getting harder and harder to raise funds and I don’t like to keep asking the same generous folks and pestering the same wonderful bands & authors who have kindly donated signed items.

Still I aim to go out with a nice decent sum raised for both charities and as ever any help much appreciated.

Training and the Staines 10K

Good to see the Staines 10K on Sunday May 19th has nearly reached its 600 entrants maximum and raised over £400 for charity through entrance fees. I am running and raising funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).

I am doing a couple of runs per week at the moment although the warmer weather does tend to entice me out more. Yes I freely admit I am a fair weather runner 🙂

Still looking for a half marathon between June and late August. My home town Potters ‘Arf would be ideal but I can’t make that weekend. Any suggestions most welcome.

Hope to have some more signed goodies soon. Have a fair few requests out there and just hoping some respond.

My JustGiving pages are:

Any help promoting them very much appreciated.

The third book on one hit wonders will be online soon. Having read all  three books I can highly recommend them, so you get a great read plus you help a charity at the same time. Thanks again to Tom Bromley and do pop along to his website http://www.tombromley.co.uk/

I am also working on getting signed items for the Stoke City £150 fundraising (to tie0in with the club’s 150th anniversary) for the two charities. I am aiming to raise £150 for CLAPA & the NDCS through these signed Stoke City related items. Any contacts for Stoke players past and present gratefully received.

Signed Ainsley Harriott photo raising funds for the NDCS

Thanks to TV chef legend Ainsley Harriott for donating a signed photo raising funds for the NDCS (National Deaf Children’s Society). You can bid on it here

More signed goodies soon 🙂

In running news I have signed up for my first race of 2013 with the Staines 10K on Sunday May 19th. This one I will be running for the NDCS and then I plan to do another 10K in July for CLAPA and then all being well a half-marathon in August/September time.

I am also looking at getting some sigend items related to Stoke City FC who celebrate their 150th anniversary this year. My idea is to raise at least £150 from related Stoke City items for the two charities.

Dante Fox goodies raising funds for CLAPA & NDCS

BIG thanks to Dante Fox for kindly donating two CD’s and t-shirt. You can bid on them here:

The running is going okay, I tend to do one to two runs per week over the winter and then ramp it up in February/March time. I am very grateful to anonymous donations on JustGiving for my fundraising for CLAPA. Truly humbling and now means over £400 has been raised for CLAPA 🙂

Staines 10K for next year and possibly Potters ‘Arf

I will be running the Staines 10K again next year on Sunday May 19th for both my chosen charities – CLAPA and NDCS. I am also looking for an early summer half marathon and my hometown my provide one with the Potters ‘Arf on Sunday June 9th. This will be another big challenge and step up after completing ten miles in this year’s Great South Run. Anyone else know of a good (flat!) half marathon in June/July time in the London/Surrey area or Staffordshire/Cheshire please let me know.

Also looking for any companies and/or bands who’d like to endorse my running and fundraising in anyway. I will for example happily road test say any new confectionary or sweets 🙂

Fundraising plans for 2013…

Not to achy after the Great South Run on what was an enjoyable run. My fundraising for Children with Cancer UK currently stands at £697.78 (thanks to some recent donations), which added to the £510 raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK gives over £1,200 raised 🙂

There are still a few signed goodies on EBay to be had, with the lively folk rockers Bellowhead sending a signed CD and currently on line is a signed CD from prog rockers Jadis:

What’s next? Well spurred on by this year’s running I am going to attempt a half marathon next May/June time plus the Staines 10K. Ideas for any fundraising most welcome.

I have two charities lined-up, one chosen by Matt Curtis who kindly sponsored me for each of my three races this year. He has chosen the Cleft Lip And Palate Association (CLAPA). Clapa is a support organisation for all those with and affected by cleft lip and palate. One in 700 children are born with this condition – about 1,000 a year in the UK. CLAPA provides information, advice and one to one support through its national network of branches. It also runs confidence-building camps for children and distributes bottles and teats for babies born with cleft lip and palate.

The second one is The National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) NDCS is the national charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people. We represent the interests and campaign for the rights of all deaf children and young people from birth to independence. NDCS believes that the family is the most important influence on a deaf child’s development. NDCS supports the deaf child through the family as well as directly supporting deaf children and young people themselves.

For these two charities I will again be auctioning off signed goodies via EBay so any contacts much appreciated.

Thank you all again for your support, it is very much appreciated by me and the charities.
