Latest news from Sobell House
There is so much going on here at Sobell House Hospice Charity that I hardly know what to talk about first! I am thrilled that we have moved our Memory Tree to the main hospice reception – it looks even more beautiful than I had imagined in its new home. This is a time of remembrance and, as ever, this edition we have a moving story about care at Sobell House – this time about Denise and her daughters. If you would like to remember someone special to you, please do consider finding out more about our Lights of Love celebration. It is one of my favourite moments in the year – a space to reflect, remember and celebrate in the company of those who have also experienced loss.

Sobell House is – and always has been, since its inception – a collaboration between the NHS, the charity, and the community that we serve, and so I like to take a moment each month to thank those who support us. Thanks to our 29 volunteers at Oxford Round Table’s fireworks event this year. It’s always a lovely event and we are so grateful to those who volunteer their time to raise funds for us. Enormous thanks are also due to our incredible Oxford Half runners who raised a record-breaking amount this year.

We are now in winter festivals season and so shops often get busier as we look for gifts for friends and family. Our shops are no exception! Read on to find out more about everything from Christmas cards to our designer bags event. There really is something for everyone!

With my best wishes,

Our Memory Tree

This week, we moved our Memory Tree to its new home in our main reception. This location provides people with extended visiting hours, and a warm and welcoming space to sit and reflect on the memories shared with their loved one. Here you can watch a timelapse of the installation…

Denise’s story

Denise was cared for on our inpatient unit ten years ago. Sarah and her sisters didn’t leave their mum’s side during her final days, and here Sarah reflects on what it meant to have Sobell House’s support during this difficult time.

“Sobell House became a home-from-home for us as well during Mum’s last days. There was a constant flow of family and friends visiting, and when it was time to let her rest, we’d all gather in the family room to eat takeout and share stories, often ending up with enough pizza or Chinese food leftover to share with the staff.”

Oxford Half – race day results

We are so excited to share that our Oxford Half team have gone for gold and raised £101,541.56 for Sobell House! This is a record-breaking amount and we’re so grateful to our runners for going above and beyond to help our hospice.

Many people took part in memory of a loved one and it was very moving to hear everyone’s Sobell story.

A heartfelt thank you from us to Team Sobell – this money could fund 4,415 hours of compassionate nursing care, so you have made a huge difference to people facing life-limiting illness.

Lights of Love – 15 December

The loss of a loved one is incredibly difficult, no matter how much time has passed. Our Lights of Love remembrance service is a chance to remember the people who have sadly gone, but who will always be loved and celebrated.

One of our 2023 attendees said: “Thank you for a lovely service. It always makes me feel close to my Mum at this time of year, which is hard when you have lost a loved one.”

Join us on Sunday 15 December for an afternoon filled with readings, poems, and musical performances from local choirs and a brass band. You can attend the service in-person at The Olivier Hall, St. Edward’s School (limited free parking is available) or watch online.

If you cannot attend, you are still warmly welcome to make a dedication in memory of a loved one – their name will be displayed during the service and you can watch it back at a time that suits you.

The power of music!

A quartet of musicians from the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra recently joined one of our Living Well day sessions to play music for and with our patients. Rachel, one of our Living Well Therapy Assistants, shared this:
“The atmosphere was wonderful. There were some quieter reflective moments then a lot of laughter as their lead Flautist pulled some Jethro Tull out of the bag at the request of a patient. We love how the orchestra shares their music but also involves everyone in their work. For example, in each workshop someone takes the conductor’s baton and is put in charge of the quartet – it is a wonderful moment to see.
We really believe in the importance of music at Sobell House. We know its power, its value, and its importance to life, but we can’t always deliver on the high-quality that the Oxford Philharmonic musicians do, so we really couldn’t do it without them.”
Thank you so much to Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra for bringing so much joy to our patients and staff.
